We now have a young grandchild so thought we would drain the pond but still want a water fearure, but not sure what do do with all the surrouning area, we have kept all the large ornamental stones. I looked on the sites about ponds but they only tel you how to build one & I want ideas so that its still looks good.

Why not use the ornamental stones to create a small waterfall. Your grandchild and the birds will love the feature of the cascading water. Try a recycling water feature with just a tiny pool at the bottom that will amaze the birds and give your grandchild great joy. Kids just love cascading water. Fill in the rest of the area with good dirt and plant flowers and shrubs that like the wet area. If this was a natural pond, you are going to have a wet area even though you have drained the pond. There are many fountains of this nature on Ebay and winter is a good time to get a good price. Some of the natural plants for this kind of feature are ferns, lungwort, spiderwort, willows, mosses of various kinds. My grandchild was helping me plant gardens from age 2 on. He started with digging holes. We had lots of fun together and he was really excited when something bloomed even though he barely scratched the dirt. You can also add decorative birdfeeders but keep them away from the fountain or the birds will dump the seeds in the water. Adding a bench for sitting and watching the water and birds could also look great in the kind of area.
Fill in the basin with gravel and use it as the base for your new water feature. The pump can be in the gravel at the lowest point so that you can drain it if you need using the pump.
I have seen yards that use rocks to make what looks like a flowing water stream without any water. just colored rock. Some will even put a small foot bridge that goes over the "stream"
