I want to cut a hole in the wall and add a patio door. How much would a contractor charge for this? is this a 1Kish or 10Kish job?

I think that ‘woodtick’ has given you good advice, and with a reasonable cost estimate. You should be very ‘involved’ with the work as it progresses — to make sure that *everything* goes well — to *your satisfaction*!
a lot depends on construction of house ..if its rendered its easier ..if brick it needs to be toothed if done properly ..it will need a lintel over opening ..but 3K will cover most eventualities
I would be glad to answer you question however you have not provided us with enough information to produce an estimate. Is this a single family house? What type of siding? Where is the door going to be located in the house? What is on the interior walls? What type and size of patio door? And where are you located? Standard installation of a vinyl patio door with minimal to no variables in the Chicago Area should start between $900 to 1,500.
There are a lot of variables in this. Location makes a difference, the quality of the door, any reframing that may be required, height above ground (whether there is a solid surface to stand on outside), drywall finishing, trim, etc. A local contractor will be much more able to nail down a specific price, but plan on spending a minimum of $3000 including materials to get the job done. Hope this helps.
