How often do I need to change the water for my beta?
My male beta lives in a two gallon tank– no air bubbles, no heater, no filter. There’s gravel, a few rocks, some plastic plants but that’s about it. Not much decorations since I want to give him enough space to swim around.
Anyway, I’ve read somewhere that you need to change the water once every week. Since he’s a tropical fish–and I’m not taking any chances of losing the little guy–I clean the tank every Monday. However, sometimes I WANT to leave him there for another weak because the tank is spotless! No algae growing, not a speck of dirt anywhere. The water is crystal clear. Sadly, my back is aching from cleaning his bowl.
He’s healthy, active, and has a great appetite.
So… how often do I "really" need to change the water?

I’d say every other day.

Biweekly water changes would be better. Once every two weeks should be fine with your betta.
I have a beta and I only change his tank every 2 weeks. Changing the water to much can stress them out. So every 2 weeks is good.
I have a beta in a small bowl about 5 inches wide. No filters heaters or anythins but rocks and water. I only change it’s water every few weeks too. I’ve had it since maybe before Nov. 2006 and he’s perfectly fine.
All of it once a week. Clear doesn’t clean by any means. If you want him to live healthily for a long time you will in fact have to change his water every monday for the extent of his life. That means possibly for the next 4 years. Maybe fish are not the pet for you. They aren’t as easy as say a cat or dog. You have the least intensive fish on the market, big tanks can be far more work.
If you do a partial water change every Monday that will be enough. You don’t have to change all the water in the tank every time. In fact, it’s best not to change all of the water every time. If you change about 20% of the water every week or two you’ll be fine.
You really should consider getting a little heater for him, at least before it gets cold in winter, though… bettas will suffer from cold.
You should probably change it at the end of each week,or if clean, the beginning or middle of the next. I had a beta too, and I did once a week and it seemed to work okay for me.
I got a sucker fish so I dont have to clean that often but you should clean when the water gets cloudy
Change 25% of water and vacuum gravel weekly! It would be a good idea to get a small filter for your tank! It won’t cost much($10.00 and under!). Good luck!
Yes, you should do a tank change every week. In a unfiltered tank I would change out at least 1/2 the water every week, and all of the water every 2 weeks. Change out water in a filtered tank about 20% every week.
I use a gravel vac to do this so I can chase down and remove fish waste without dumping out all the water.
once a week will do fine. But if you are not home for longer then that, it will be fine. Bettas can eat algy anyway.
Every few days in a tank that small would be best.
