Saw a snake in my garden today. Black with 2 bright yellow stripes from head to tail. Any ideas what it is?

I live in Kansas, outside of Kansas City, in town but have an undeveloped field right behind our lot. No water around. The snake was probably about a foot long or so, didn’t get a great look, took off running instead. Looked at pictures of whip snakes, don’t think that was what it was.

The snake that yo saw was a common garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis.) Theyre harmless, so you dont have to worry about anything. They probably wont bite unless you step on them or antagonize them, so if you leave them alone, they will leave you alone.
You can find all the info on them here:

They still give me the creeps though!!!
sounds like a common garter snake.

there are many species that all look different
this is a picture of an eastern garter snake. they are harmless and eat frogs, tiny rodents, and bugs
Probably a garter snake. Almost certainly not a rattlesnake so nothing to worry about.
garter snake
It sounds like it was either a garden or ribbon snake. Both totally harmless to humans.
I don’t know, but I almost did a handstand right on top of one the other day when I suddenly had an urge to do a handstand that I haven’t done in 15 years. WTF!?
You FOOL that was no snake! That was Lee Harvey Oswald! Infamous killer of JFK! How could you have let him evade our grasp yet again. You have made this day a dark one for America.
