Winter is coming and my big lab has a dog house, but I dont want him out there in the Illinois winter. I cannot put him in the house because he is so destructive. Its not a good idea.
I though about building a pre designed garden shed with windows from a manufacturer, and putting him in there, but again, he chews and would destruct the shed, so now I think I will just put a doggie door in the back of the garage. How much do you think it would cost? Whats involved? I want a door that swings like saloon doors or something that.
Any ideas to help me decide what to do?
My back yard is fenced in around the side and the back of the garage, so the dog would be loose in his fenced in yard. The garage is made of wood and I do not plan to put a door in a door, but a door in the wall of the garage. The walls are 2×6’s I think and covered with wood. The siding is that old lap compressed siding they used in the 1970’s. I want the door to be about 2 ft tall and wide enough to squeeze a fat choco lab thru. The dog will have access to the garage this way because the doors will be down and the side door closed. What I would not do for my dog. Lord!!! I just installed K worth of chain link fence for him and now he has learned to dig. I keep a wheel barrel full of dirt to fill holes in about once a week.

I mean, the best I can come up with is "This is how you plant a seed", or "This is a shovel, it is used for…."
Preferably nothing that involves carrying around dirt etc.
Any ideas?

My male beta lives in a two gallon tank– no air bubbles, no heater, no filter. There’s gravel, a few rocks, some plastic plants but that’s about it. Not much decorations since I want to give him enough space to swim around.

Anyway, I’ve read somewhere that you need to change the water once every week. Since he’s a tropical fish–and I’m not taking any chances of losing the little guy–I clean the tank every Monday. However, sometimes I WANT to leave him there for another weak because the tank is spotless! No algae growing, not a speck of dirt anywhere. The water is crystal clear. Sadly, my back is aching from cleaning his bowl.

He’s healthy, active, and has a great appetite.

So… how often do I "really" need to change the water?

I am looking to raise some animals for meat such as chickens, fish and maybe rabbits. Is it possible to compost the meat an organic and relatively cheap way? As in put it back into the dirt without causing harm to plants as I’d use it in a home garden.

Do I have to dig up the ground to put in a patio?

Could I build a frame and have the patio elevated a bit? Can I lay rubber patio pavers over the dirt?

It’s a 20×12 area and I loathe the idea of digging up that much dirt. And finding a place to put it!

I like the idea of concrete pavers but do I have to lay rock and then sand? Or can I just use sand?

What’s a good online tool for garden design?

If an online tool isn’t available, I’d also take software suggestions. I’d love to have it also have plant suggestions, ect.

I just bought a house and it has a lovely backyard that is all dirt at this point. When spring hits, I have to start planting!

Also, could you be specific. Tell what could represent what. For instance–crushed oreos for dirt.
Okay, this is for elementary kids. lol
MzEnya, cute idea but the materials we had to use were cookies, candy, etc.

I have tried the places like Lowes and nurseries and bulk rock places but they all point me to the expensive bags and I need at least 10 cu yds there is no way to do this by the bag for a reasonable amount of money. At most a bag hold 3 cu feet which is very little.

I tried the trucking/hauling companies but their dirt is directly dug from the ground with no treatment for weeds or termites.

I have been digging a hole in my yard for a water garden that I am going to construct, but the soil is rock hard and in-organic and because of the hole’s location in between two huge trees there are thousands of roots from small grass roots to huge 6" thick or bigger roots from the trees. I’ve been using a hoe to loosen the dirt for shoveling and to cut the roots, but it’s becoming an extreme physically enduring project. Are there any other low-budget methods to get a hole dug? Remember, I need to dig a hole to match my measurements and designs for a water garden, not just a big hole.

Note: A water garden, in my case, is a small man-made pond with fish, aquatic plants, frogs, etc.

Will it be safe to eat the stuff we are going to grow? It seems weird to me. We are doing a veggie/fruit garden over my mom’s house and she wants to put "organic fertilizer" (POOP!) in the dirt. What is the proper way to do this? This is the first time I’ve grown anything so any tips would be helpful! Thanks!

How to prepare soil for a concrete patio?

I am planning to have a concrete patio poured at my new house. How can I be sure the contractor is properly preparing the "underlayment" before pouring the concrete? I know that a certain amount of dirt should be removed (about 8"), that 3/4" gravel and fine gravel should add back about 4" when compacted, and that there should be a pre-soil treatment as well as a vapor barrier installed before the rebar goes down, but what else should I be sure gets done before the 4" thick concrete gets poured?

Also, what PSI rating should the concrete be for this type of application?

I am in the Southern California area, in case weather is a concern.

I am asking this question for my mother. Our family cat of 16 years had to be put to sleep a few months ago and in her old age she started not wanting to brave the cold outside to toilet and instead was using the indoor garden. Now 3 or 4 months later mum has got a new kitten for the family but she is trying to use the same spot inside as our old cat. I read that cats do this because the smell of previous animals is really strong to them even though it has been cleaned. So Mum wants to stop this behavior ASAP. The kitten is really good and goes outside, she has a cat door and is really good about using it and gets lots and lots of praise when she goes outside, but she still tries to use the indoor garden as well. It is full of alive plants and is a big stone planter box so it can’t be removed. Any ideas on how to stop this or anything we can spray around live plants that will deter kitty? Oh one more thing, mum has tried one thing that you sprinkle around, not sure of the name of it I think its some sort of orange crystals but its not helping, and she has tried putting pebbles on top of the dirt but kitty still just tries to dig the pebbles out of the way to get to the dirt.

I have a terra cotta pot in it that my pets like to swim through. I wanna get dark-brown gravel to make it look like dirt. Oh, and a lot of plants.

Any suggestions on species of plant/other decor? Any help is needed.

Thanks!

I have about 6 feet of space between the house and the fence and I want to create a little patio or sitting area out there. There is nothing but dirt right now and there is a good 1 foot difference between the hight of the ground at the house and the height at the fence. What is the best method for flattening the ground, then paving over with stone or brick? And should I leave some slope for drainage purposes? Any other drainage issues to consider?
