First of all Judy, you better be sure that you patio roof has enough slope
to accommodate a shingled roof.
Rolled roofing like you now have is usually used on patios because often there pitch
is not enough for shingles. Unless you already know that you have enough pitch, you would
need to check that first I would not use shingles with less than a 3/12 pitch. (three 3" of rise for
every 12" of run) If you do not have the pitch that you need, perhaps rubber roofing would be a
better choice.
No matter which route you go, you will need to get the new roofing under the slate. With out pics
or other description of what you ar working against, it would be hard to explain how to do that.
Also, working with a tile roof is often best left to a pro.
Thanks for asking,
Randy
