What are good items for my souvenir collection?

I’m interested in collecting one of the same item in each of the countries I visit, (i.e. one ring from each country, or one set of windchimes, or one keychain…). Anyone have ideas on an elegant item that I could easily find, pay for, carry and display? (Most countries I have been to are in Africa.)

How about Christmas ornaments? The thing about them is that you can use anything as a Christmas ornament. I live in China and I’m currently buying a lot of things Chinese would never consider to be a Christmas ornament so that one day I’ll have an entire tree of Chinese items. I’ve bought things like small gourds, these woven reed things, little stuffed cat-like animals, the Chinese horoscopes, etc.
From Africa, I have some ornaments made from coconut shells and raffia. I can also use a small carved wooden statue my husband gave me.
And so on.
I also like to collect ceramic bowls, but they are heavy and bulky.
CHARMS—simple–can be inexpensive or elaborate–easily found in every country–numerous choices of design and subject matter–and easily carried to be shown off—-charms
I think a great idea would be to collect dolls from each country you visit. My mother used to collect dolls–everywhere she went she would buy a small doll (generally handmade, locally) wearing the traditional local dress. African countries have some gorgeous textiles, fantastic clothing, and very interesting types of dolls. Happy collecting!
Oooh! Shot glasses are always fun and can easily be displayed. I’ve heard of people who collect spoons, thimbles, keychains, magnets, t-shirts, postcards, snowglobes, necklaces, bracelets, you name it, you can probably collect it and find it almost anywhere. My parents collect shot glasses from every place they’ve traveled through out the years (and I’m now 25) so they have an EXTENSIVE collection that is displayed in a case. It is fun to collect those.
Hi there…I collect shot glasses on my travels. I have them on display on my kitchen counter for now. I hope to eventually get a shot glass display holder that I can hang on my wall. They are small, easy to pack in your clothing so they don’t break, and usually not that expensive.
I’m lame and collect key chains from each country cause they are soo easy to find.
spoons, magnets, key chains, post cards these are small enought to carry in your suit case… Happy Traveling
